Concrete Canvas®

Geosynthetic Cementitious Composite Mats

Concrete Canvas® (CC) is a Geosynthetic Cementitious Composite Mat (GCCM) designed for erosion control and weed suppression applications. Essentially, it’s concrete on a roll.

CC combines a three-dimensional fibre matrix with a specially formulated dry cementitious mix and a waterproof PVC backing. When hydrated with water, the cementitious mix hardens to form a thin, durable, waterproof layer that provides a lower-carbon alternative to conventional poured, precast and sprayed concrete.

Concrete Canvas® is flexible and has excellent drape characteristics, making it well suited for complex surfaces, channels and areas where conventional concrete installation may be difficult. It can be installed without on-site mixing or measuring—simply unroll, secure and add water.

About Concrete Canvas®

Concrete Canvas® is a flexible GCCM used for a wide range of erosion control and weed suppression applications. Its unique construction provides high levels of flexibility and drape, making it ideal for complex surfaces and smaller channels.

CC is available in three thicknesses:

  • CCT1™ – ASTM D8364 Type I
  • CCT2™ – ASTM D8364 Type II
  • CCT3™ – ASTM D8364 Type III

The T-Series is designed to align with the GCCM specification standard ASTM D8364, helping engineers and specifiers select the appropriate product for their application.

Concrete Canvas® is available in different roll formats, including Batched Rolls for sites with limited access and Bulk Rolls for larger projects.

Benefits of Using Concrete Canvas® (CC)

  • Quick to Install – CC can be laid at a rate of 200m2/hour, up to 10 times faster than conventional concrete solutions.
  • Easy to Use – CC requires less equipment, smaller crews and no on-site concrete mixing or measuring. Simply unroll, secure and add water
  • Lower Project Costs – Faster installation, reduced equipment requirements and simplified logistics can make Concrete Canvas® a cost-effective alternative to conventional concrete methods.
  • Eco-friendly – Concrete Canvas® uses up to 95% less material than conventional concrete, helping reduce embodied carbon and transportation requirements.
  • Long Lasting – CC offers up to 120 years of performance life for erosion control applications. Click here for the durability certificate.

Key Properties of                  Concrete Canvas® (CC)

  • Waterproof – The PVC backing provides a waterproof alternative to traditional concrete, making infrastructure weather resistant.
  • Strong – CC has a 24-hour compressive strength of 50MPa. With a three-dimensional fibre matrix, the strong fibre reinforcement of CC absorbs any impact affecting infrastructure, which prevents cracking and makes it completely safe.
  • Durable – CC is 5x more abrasion resistant than standard concrete, has excellent chemical resistance, good weathering performance, and will not degrade in UV.
  • Flexible – CC has good drape characteristics and will closely follow the ground profile and fit around existing infrastructure. Unset CC can be cut or tailored using basic hand tools.

Concrete Canvas® FAQs

What is Concrete Canvas® GCCM?

Concrete Canvas® (CC) is part of a revolutionary new class of construction materials called Geosynthetic Cementitious Composite Mats (GCCMs). It is a flexible, concrete filled geosynthetic which hardens on hydration to form a thin, durable, waterproof and lower carbon alternative to conventional concrete. Essentially, it’s concrete on a roll.

How does Concrete Canvas® work?

Concrete Canvas® is unrolled into position and secured in place. The material is then hydrated. There is a 2-hour working window before setting begins, and in 24 hours the material hardens to service performance specifications.

How is Concrete Canvas® manufactured?

Concrete Canvas® is manufactured in our UK production plant using bespoke machinery designed by Concrete Canvas Ltd. A 3-dimensional synthetic fibre matrix is filled with a custom cement blend before a PVC coating is added to one side.

What is the lifespan of properly installed Concrete Canvas®?

Concrete Canvas® is BBA certified with durability in excess of 120 years when used for erosion control applications. For advice on specific climates please contact Concrete Canvas Ltd.

What are the weights of the different types of Concrete Canvas®?

Concrete Canvas® GCCM has nominal dry weights of 8kg/m², 12kg/m² and 19kg/m² for CCT1™, CCT2™ and CCT3™ respectively.

Are samples of CC available?

Yes. Concrete Canvas Ltd can supply small and large sample packs on request, which contain hardened swatches and unset A4 samples of each of the three material thicknesses. Due to the volume of requests for sample packs, a postage fee may apply.

What is the price of Concrete Canvas® (CC)?

The price of Concrete Canvas® (CC) is volume dependant and the price/m² drops when ordering large volumes. Contact your local Concrete Canvas Ltd rep for a quote specific to your requirements and delivery location.
