Project Overview

Titan provided the material and installation for Concrete Protection Liner (CPL) in a trunk sewer running ~6.30 km, made up of 6 lined structures: 3 diversion chambers, 2 drop structures and 1 reception shaft.

Infrastructure Improvements and Expansion

This client required the construction of a trunk sewer that is 2.4 meters in diameter to divert wastewater flows from one sanitary trunk system to another. The end goal is to balance flows in the collection system and allow the wastewater plants to accommodate planned future growth.

It will provide additional operational flexibility for the maintenance of the critical sanitary sewer infrastructure and make the system more resilient to climate change and extreme weather events.

To ensure the longevity and integrity of the new infrastructure, CPL was specified to protect the concrete from microbial-induced corrosion (MIC) and infiltration and inflow (I&I).

What is Concrete Protection Liner (CPL)?

Concrete Protection Liner (CPL) is an HDPE liner that embeds into the ID of the concrete pipe and protects concrete infrastructure from corrosion and degradation over time.

CPL features anchors that embed directly into the concrete pipe or structure, which ensures a durable, long-lasting barrier that safeguards the concrete. You get the durability of concrete pipe with the flow characteristics and corrosion protection of HDPE pipe.

The design life of CPL equals the design life of the concrete pipe, structures, or surfaces in which it is installed. In the event of a primary gasket failure or a crack in the concrete, CPL provides secondary containment, eliminating inflow and infiltration (I&I) and assuring no wastewater leaks into the environment.

Key Features

  • Corrosion protection from MIC (microbial-induced corrosion) and Hydrogen Sulfide
  • Elimination of I&I (inflow and infiltration)
  • Excellent abrasion resistance
  • Superior chemical resistance
  • Exceptional backpressure resistance to groundwater

CPL in Action

Bonding

Embeds directly into the concrete, becoming a structural part of the concrete.

Application Process

Applied to the precast or poured in place forms prior to the concrete being poured.

Moisture & Humidity

Not affected by relative humidity or moisture content in the concrete.

Backpressure Resistance

Tested to both ASTM and Dibt (SKZ) backpressure standards.

Maintenance & Longevity

No need for reapplication; design life matches the design life of the structure.

Elongation & Expansion

High elongation and expansion properties, between 300% to 500%.

Choosing the Right Installation Method

Concrete protection is project specific. The choice between poured-in-place and precast will depend on your project requirements.

For this application, CPL was used in poured-in-place reception shafts and chambers, and in precast large diameter pipe (2,438 mm).
